Denis Matsuev was born in Irkutsk in 1975 into a musical family. Starting his musical education he received from his grandmother Vera Albertovna Rammul, plays several instruments. Denis, along with his family moved to Moscow and entered the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1991 he became a laureate of the International Charity Foundation "New Names", so visited with concerts in over 40 countries. In 1993, he entered the Moscow State Conservatory. In 1995 Matsuev became a soloist of the Moscow State Philharmonic.
Matsuev’s excellent recordings of works by Liszt, Rachmaninov and Schostakowitsch have thoroughly received great response by international critics.
On Franz Liszt’s 200-year anniversary in 2011, British Independent Magazine selected the “Matsuev – Liszt” album, which was recorded with the Russian National Orchestra and Mikhail Pletnev, as “Album of the Week”. The latest recordings of both Shostakowitsch concerts as well as the fifth piano concert by Rodion Schtschedrin with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra was rated five stars by BBC Music Magazine in 2012.
